Farm Island Lake Fishery Summary

Farm Island Lake is a large and popular fishing lake located about seven miles south of Aitkin in Aitkin County. The lake covers approximately 2,005 acres and includes 883 acres of littoral habitat, creating extensive spawning and feeding areas for many gamefish species.

Farm Island Lake reaches a maximum depth of 56 feet and features a mix of sand, gravel, silt, and rubble substrates that support a wide variety of aquatic vegetation. Emergent, floating-leaf, and submerged plants are common throughout the lake and play an important role in maintaining water clarity and providing habitat for fish and other aquatic organisms.

Two public boat accesses with concrete ramps are located on the lake—one on the northeast side and one on the southwest side—making Farm Island Lake easily accessible to anglers and recreational boaters.

The lake is managed primarily for walleye, with northern pike, largemouth bass, black crappie, and bluegill considered important secondary species.

Farm Island Lake Survey Information

Walleye

in Aitkin, Farm Island Lake has a long history of walleye stocking dating back to 1922.

Because natural reproduction is limited, the Minnesota DNR currently stocks Mississippi River strain walleye fry annually to maintain the fishery.

Survey results showed:

  • Catch rate: 8 walleyes per gill net

  • Long-term average: 6.8 per gill net

  • Average length: 14 inches

  • Fish ranged from 7.2 to 24.6 inches

Strong year classes from 2019 and 2021 made up much of the current population.

A special regulation requiring release of walleyes between 16–19 inches has helped maintain a healthy size structure since it was implemented in 1996.

Northern Pike

Northern pike abundance is currently very high.

  • Catch rate: 15.9 per gill net

  • Average length: 19.5 inches

  • Maximum size: 29.6 inches

The population is dominated by a strong 2020 year class, which accounts for nearly 70% of the sample.

Because of the high numbers of smaller fish, anglers are encouraged to harvest pike under 22 inches to help improve size structure.

Farm Island Lake follows the North Central Zone northern pike regulations:

  • Possession limit of 10 pike

  • No more than 2 fish over 26 inches

  • All fish between 22–26 inches must be released

Black Crappie

Crappie numbers have remained stable.

  • Average length: 8.6 inches

  • 43% of fish measured 10 inches or larger

  • Largest sampled fish: 11.2 inches

Growth rates are excellent, with crappies reaching 10 inches in under four years.

Bluegill

Bluegill numbers are relatively low but growth rates are strong.

  • Average trap net length: 5.5 inches

  • Fish up to 8.6 inches sampled

  • Gill net sample average: 7.5 inches

  • Fish up to 9.7 inches

Lower density appears to be helping produce better-sized bluegills.

Largemouth Bass

Farm Island Lake is widely known as a reliable bass fishing lake.

  • Electrofishing surveys captured bass up to 18.2 inches

  • Population has remained stable over many years

Smallmouth Bass

Smallmouth bass have been increasing in abundance since juveniles were first observed in 2010.

  • Average length: about 13 inches

  • Largest sampled fish: 16.8 inches

The smallmouth fishery is still developing but provides an additional angling opportunity.

Cisco (Tullibee)

Cisco were sampled in low numbers, which is typical for Farm Island Lake.

Cisco serve as an important forage species for larger predator fish including walleye and northern pike.

Because the lake sits near the southern edge of Minnesota’s tullibee range, suitable cold-water habitat can be limited during warmer summers.
