Mille LACS Lake Fishery Summary
Mille Lacs Lake is one of the most famous fisheries in the Midwest and the second-largest inland lake in Minnesota. The lake covers over 128,000 acres and sits across Mille Lacs County, Crow Wing County, and Aitkin County.
Despite its massive size, Mille Lacs is relatively shallow, reaching a maximum depth of about 42 feet, with extensive shallow rock reefs and mud flats that create ideal habitat for predator fish.
The lake is nationally known for its walleye, smallmouth bass, muskellunge, northern pike, and yellow perch fishing. Mille Lacs is also part of Minnesota’s Large Lake Program, meaning fish populations and angler harvest are monitored closely through annual surveys and creel studies.
Because of cooperative management with the Treaty of 1837 tribal nations, harvest limits and fishing regulations on Mille Lacs are carefully managed each year based on the lake’s walleye population and overall fish biomass.
Mille Lacs Lake Survery Information
Walleye
Walleye management on Mille Lacs is highly regulated and based on annual fish population monitoring.
For the 2025 fishing season, the safe harvest level was set at:
201,600 pounds total harvest
The state harvest allocation was:
113,600 pounds
Recent surveys showed:
Walleye biomass increased due to strong forage availability
Fish condition (plumpness) improved across most size classes
Anglers commonly catch walleyes ranging from:
13 to 25 inches
Large numbers of young walleyes from the 2024 year class were observed during sampling.
However, recent winter surveys showed lower catch rates, suggesting spring fishing may be slower in some years.
Yellow Perch
Yellow perch populations have improved in recent years.
Strong year classes from:
2021
2022
2023
have produced many 9–12 inch perch.
The winter of 2025 produced the highest perch harvest since 2011, leading to a reduced bag limit of five fish per day to protect the population.
Smallmouth Bass
Mille Lacs Lake is widely considered one of the best smallmouth bass lakes in North America.
Recent sampling showed:
Lengths from 10.7 to 21.6 inches
Most fish between 13–20 inches
Many trophy fish are present, and the lake maintains a strong balance between younger fish and older trophy-sized bass.
Regulations require anglers to release smallmouth bass longer than 17 inches.
Northern Pike
Northern pike are managed to produce a quality trophy fishery.
Sampling in 2024 showed:
Largest female sampled: 45.5 inches
Largest male sampled: 35 inches
About 20% of fish were over 30 inches
Roughly 1% exceeded 40 inches
The lake has a 30-inch maximum size limit, protecting larger fish.
Muskellunge
Muskellunge are periodically sampled and provide another trophy fishing opportunity.
Recent survey results showed:
Fish ranging from 33.9 to 54.9 inches
13.5% of sampled fish exceeded 50 inches
Stocking improvements beginning in 2025 aim to increase muskie catch rates by stocking yearling fish annually.

Nick is very knowledgeable and is a great teacher. I consider myself a slow learner and I also didn't realize how much there was to catching fish and he was able to teach me, and the best part was he was patient and didn't make me feel dumb when I did things wrong. If I could give him 10/10 stars, I would. Darin Gerads2025-04-30Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Whether you’re targeting one species or there to just put numbers in the boat he will get you to what you are seeking.
