Shamineau Lake Survery Information

Walleye

Walleye populations in Lake Shamineau are considered average and well balanced, with fish represented across multiple size classes.

Survey findings indicate:

  • Good numbers of fish 10–25 inches long

  • Increased numbers of 10–15 inch walleyes, which should improve future angling opportunities

  • Fry stocking occurs annually

Strong survival of stocked fish from 2017 and 2018 year classes was observed, producing good numbers of fish measuring 13–15 inches in recent surveys.

Muskellunge

Lake Shamineau supports a low-density but high-quality muskellunge population.

Research surveys estimated:

  • Approximately 135 adult muskies over 30 inches

  • Lengths ranging from 38–51 inches

  • Weights between 15 and 33 pounds

Although muskie numbers are relatively low, trophy-sized fish are present.

Northern Pike

Northern pike are present in lower numbers than many lakes of similar size, which can benefit other predator species such as walleyes and muskies.

Survey highlights include:

  • About 20% of sampled pike were over 28 inches

  • Fish ranged from 8–36 inches

Anglers are encouraged to harvest smaller pike and release larger fish to maintain quality size structure.

Yellow Perch

Yellow perch populations remain stable.

Survey findings show:

  • Most perch measuring 5–8 inches

  • Very few fish exceeding 10 inches

Although perch provide important forage for predator species, they typically offer limited angling value due to their smaller size.

Black Crappie

Crappie fishing can be one of the better opportunities on Lake Shamineau.

Survey results showed:

  • Crappies up to nearly 14 inches

  • More than 55% measured over 9 inches

These numbers indicate a healthy crappie population with good size quality.

Bluegill

Bluegill numbers were typical for lakes in the region.

Survey results showed:

  • Most bluegills 5–7 inches

  • About 40% measured over 7 inches

  • Only 10% exceeded 8 inches

Growth tends to be slower, and harvest pressure can influence the number of larger fish.

Largemouth Bass

Largemouth bass populations are strong in Lake Shamineau.

Research sampling estimated:

  • Approximately 4,790 bass in the lake

  • Most fish 12–16 inches

  • Bass over 20 inches were sampled

These numbers indicate good bass fishing opportunities.
