Hubert Lake Fishery Summary

Hubert Lake is a large and diverse fishery located just southeast of Nisswa in Crow Wing County, within the heart of the Brainerd Lakes Area of central Minnesota. The lake covers approximately 1,300 acres and features 465 acres of littoral habitat, providing excellent conditions for aquatic vegetation and fish habitat.

Hubert Lake reaches a maximum depth of 83 feet, making it one of the deeper lakes in the Nisswa area. Water clarity averages around 14.9 feet, allowing healthy weed growth and supporting a balanced ecosystem of predator fish and forage species. The lake is well known locally for its quality bass fishing, strong crappie population, and stocked walleye fishery.

One unique feature of Hubert Lake is the special bass regulation implemented in 2005, which requires that all largemouth and smallmouth bass over 12 inches be immediately released. This regulation was designed to maintain and enhance the bass population, and survey results indicate it has been successful in producing a healthy number of larger fish.

Hubert Lake Survey Information

Walleye

Walleyes are stocked into Hubert Lake as fall fingerlings every three years, helping maintain a consistent fishery.

  • Catch rate: 6.9 per gill net

  • Average length: 18.3 inches

  • All sampled fish were over 13 inches

  • Nearly all fish came from stocked year classes

These results indicate a healthy stocked walleye population.

  • Average length: 14.9 inches

  • 77% of fish were over 12 inches

The special bass regulation appears to be helping maintain strong populations of both species.

Hubert Lake is known for producing quality crappies.

  • Catch rate: 2.2 per gill net

  • Average size: 10.4 inches

  • 82% were over 8 inches

Harvesting smaller pike under 22 inches can help maintain a balanced fish population.
